CAMPING AND KAYAKING

CAMPING AND KAYAKING

Camping and kayaking are a great two-some for summertime vacations.  Considerthat there are 193 million acres of national wildlands that include more than 4,400 miles of wild and scenic rivers on which to float and over 400 campgrounds in which to – well, camp. Whether you are looking for a good weekend getaway or planning your weeks-long adventure you can find great destinations online. Want to stay close to home? Visit www.stateparks.org and the National Association of State Parks allows you to search through a drop-down menu for all 50 states.  From the northern most states of Alaska and Main to the islands that make up the state of Hawaii and the tropics of Florida you can discover places that allow you to enjoy Mother Nature’s places to relax as well as her opportunities for extreme adventure.

Beginner kayakers should know the variety of types of kayaks.  “Sit-on-top” kayaks are the most affordable and are the easiest on which to fish. They are also easier to get back on if you fall off!  “Touring” or “recreation” kayaks are sturdier and more stable. You sit inside a more slender vehicle designed to go faster but these models are much harder to get back inside. The newest innovations in kayaks include inflatable, nesting and folding kayaks that you wear like a backpack. Paddles come in a variety of materials and lengths. When gearing up for a camping trip with kayaking remember you will also need crossbars, ropes and ratchet straps on your vehicle. Looking to explore places beyond the familiar?

Check out www.NationalForests.org for a comprehensive overview of spectacular destinations from sea to shining sea. Some features to consider are whether you seek small bodies of water, like ponds and lakes, coastal waters, rivers, camping spots, wildlife and fishing opportunities.
